Agatha Christie Poirot Questions & Answers

Where can I buy a bulk pack of Agatha Christie books cheaply?

Places like 'The Book People' often do packs of ten books - by Ruth Rendle etc - but I want lots of Hercule Poirot books by Agatha Christie. Any suggestions?

ebay.

What are the comparisons between Poirot (Agatha Christie's) and Monk? Comparisons and contrast?

i have to do a paper on it so if anyone can help it would be great

Monk - hypochondriac - afraid of everything - thinks that he will get sick if he touches something or that something will go wrong if he does something out of the ordinary (very OCD)
Poirot - very fastidious about his appearance (but he is not gay) - but not afraid of getting ill - he is willing to get in the middle of things

both are investigators - Poirot was a policeman - Belgian - who left and became a pi - lives in England - works closely w/the police. Think something along the lines of Sherlock Holmes
Monk works with the police to solve cases, not sure if he is a cop or not - lives in USA - more of a Charlie Eppes to his brother Don Eppes - Numb3rs on Friday night
Both are fictional characters
Poirot lived in the early 1900
Monk lives in to days world
Hope this helps

A brief history of Agatha Christie

With its beautiful  countryside and tranquil atmosphere Devon of course has to be home to one of the most famous murder mystery writers Agatha Christie.

Born on 15th September 1890 Agatha began writing stories and poems at eleven and was soon winning prizes for her work. During her life she wrote over 80 novels many of which were adapted for t.v and radio. Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple are the characters that first spring to mind when pondering the works of Agatha Christie and her story of "The Mousetrap" is the longest running stage play continuing to this day having been first opened on the 25th November 1952 at The Ambassador Theatre in London.

Her twenties brought a marriage to a fighter pilot Archibald Christie and a job at Torbay Hospital nursing the casualties of war. It was during this work that she gained her knowledge of pharmaceutical drugs and this coupled with her desire to write a detective story inspired her to write about a murder using poison.

She retreated to "Moorland Hotel" in Dartmoor and completed her first novel "The Mysterious Affair at Styles". However it  would  be another five years before Hercule Poirot would be introduced to the public as the novel was initially rejected by several publishers.

The Christie family had their only daughter Rosalind in 1919 and Agatha's  1st novel was finally published in 1920.

However in 1926 Archie professed to be in love with a mutual friend Miss Neale with whom he had been having an affair.

This discovery led Agatha to flee the family home and her disappearance led to a national search which ended when she was found 11 days later at a hotel in Harrogate under the name of "Miss Neale".

Doctors claimed that she had suffered amnesia or a breakdown due to the double trauma of losing her marriage and her mother earlier that year. Others speculated that because Archie had been suspected of murdering her during the manhunt that this was her attempt at revenge whilst some considered that this kind of stunt was good for publicity.

Agatha herself maybe due to amnesia or her appetite for mystery has never since spoke of the incident.

Agatha was to remarry several years later in September 1930 to an archaeologist Max Mallowman and it was during this marriage that she returned to Devon and bought the Greenway estate in Galmpton situated amongst the glorious woodland overlooking the River Dart.

Her daughter Rosalind was given ownership in 1959 she then took up residence in 1967 with her husband Anthony Hicks. Together they purchased the surrounding farm and transformed the gardens into a uniquely beautiful collection of rare and specialist plants.

In 2000 the family gifted the estate to the National Trust and it is now open for the public to visit and enjoy this truly local treasure.
